Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the right to contest certain rulings from the chair umpire, following the practice already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development comes just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
